How to look after your human hair extensions!!

On this post I am going to share with you a few tips and tricks to take care of your hair extensions so as to prolong their life and keep them looking healthy and shiny!
There are lots of types of hair extension applications, some permanent, some semi permanent and some that are just temporarily put in every day.
Pre bonded, Micro beads, Micro weft, Clip ins, Weaves...
I could go on...
Whatever type you choose to have, you're going to want to make sure you can get the most out of the hair you have! Lets get started,
so step one

BRUSH, BRUSH, BRUSH
So first things first, when caring for your extensions this should be as important as brushing your teeth in the morning. Brushing your hair regularly is to help to upkeep your extensions and to keep them looking smooth and sleek. To do this right (and yes there is a right and wrong to brushing hair) firstly, you need to make sure you're using the right tools. Brushes with soft bristles is best, these wont cause the hair extensions to break and split and cause frizz, I recommend L'oreal's Tangle Teezer, you can buy this from your local Boots store and isn't just brilliant for your extensions its really beneficial to your own hair too! And secondly, BE GENTLE, treat your extensions like your own hair! Start to de tangle on the ends progressing further to the top sections to prevent the hair from tangling more and frizzing.

Step two

WASH, WASH, WASH
Now your hair extensions wont get as dirty as your own hair so it isn't essential to wash them as often as your own hair, but to maintain the health of your extensions it is important to make sure you ARE washing them.
Now there are essential steps to take when your wash your extensions, before you do anything you must de tangle your hair (refer to step one). After you have ensured all knots are out of your hair extensions you should wet your extensions bit by bit to prevent tangling, try to have a wide toothed comb on hand to use if knots occur. Finally, make sure you are using a good shampoo! Moisture shampoos are brilliant for extensions because it keeps the hair soft, my personal favourite is Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo, when applying the shampoo do not scrub, smooth it over the hair. If you scrub you will cause the hair to frizz!

Step three

CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION
And finally one of the most important steps is to make sure you are regularly conditioning your hair extensions, after you have shampooed the hair use a good hair mask! I use OSMO Intensive Deep Repair Mask, leave it on long enough to do its magic then wash it off making sure to keep de tangling with your wide toothed comb. Using spray in conditioners is just as important as using your regular conditioners, try to use this a couple of times daily to give your hair that extra moisture. Aussie Miracle Hair Insurance is a really good leave in conditioner, it isn't costly and smells amazing! Try not to over do it with your hair products on your extensions as this can cause the hair to look dull and limp, make the hair get dirty at a faster rate and could cause extra tangles!

After washing your hair, try to leave the extensions to dry naturally! Anything that means applying less heat to your extensions is always a good thing. Create hairstyles which mean using heated styling equipment less, or if you need to use your straighteners or curling tongs then make sure you're using a good heat protector.

If you are wearing clip in hair extensions, when you take them out make sure you are storing them correctly! You do not want to come to use your hair again and find it in a frizzy ball of hair, brush and tangles out, spray  some leave in conditioner on them and store in a clear tidy space with a loose bobble around them to keep them neat and together.
If your hair extensions are permanent and cant be removed before sleep you can always sweep them back into a low ponytail, this will keep them out the way and prevent getting major bobble kink marks in the morning which can occur when placing your hair in high ponytails. Start with the same process as clip in extensions, de tangling and using spray leave in conditioner before placing in your low ponytail.

I hope these few tips on how to care for your extensions was helpful for newbies or even long time hair extension wearers.
